Some schools have found funding to offer students a number of books which support the philosophy and learning of the course. Giving these books as gifts to the students often has a surprisingly deep meaning for them. However, it is not necessary to do this.
Following is a list of some of the books distributed to Healer’s Art students from various medical schools:
- Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, a Young Man, and Life’s Greatest Lesson, Albom, Mitch; Doubleday: New York, 1997.
- How to Heal: A Guide for Caregivers, Jeff Kane, M.D.; Helios Press, 2003 (previously titled The Healing Companion: Simple and Effective Ways Your Presence Can Help People Heal, 1991).
- Kitchen Table Wisdom: Stories That Heal. Remen, Rachel Naomi, M.D.; Kitchen Table Wisdom: Stories That Heal. Riverhead Books: New York, NY; 1996.
- My Grandfather’s Blessings: Stories of Strength, Refuge and Belonging. Remen, Rachel Naomi, M.D.; Riverhead Books: New York, NY; 2000.
- Wounded Healers, Rachel Naomi Remen, M.D., editor: Wounded Healer Press, Mill Valley, CA; 1994.
- Final Exam: A Surgeon’s Reflections on Mortality, Pauline W. Chen, M.D.; Alfred Knopf, New York, NY; 2007
