A 2-1/2 day workshop in personal and professional resilience for physicians, nurses and residents

The fast growing epidemic of compassion fatigue during the professional life cycle of physicians and nurses has stimulated the search for etiology and the development of new approaches of prevention and recovery. Recent research suggests that the capacity to find personal meaning in your work is highly correlated with professional and personal resiliency and the experience of deep satisfaction in service work. Most residents, fellows, physicians, and nurses live far more meaningful lives than they realize. Experiencing the meaning already present in our daily work does not require us to change what we do but to see familiar things in new ways. Often it requires us to transcend our training and bring the perspective of the heart into the center of our professional work. Meaning is a function of the heart and not the mind. The heart is an organ of vision, a perspective that enables us to experience meaning even in the most routine aspects of our work and reignite our calling.
This 2-½ day workshop will draw on the award winning discovery model methods of RISHI’s national and international educational programs to offer participants the opportunity to discover the power of meaning to transform their experience of their daily work, revitalize their commitment and reinvigorate their service intention. Educators will be trained to offer the program at their sites.
Using reflection, poetry, symbolism, narrative, art, journaling, generous listening and small group sharing Rachel Remen, MD, Evangeline Andarsio, MD, and Mary Pat Thomas, MS, RN, AHN-BC, will enable workshop participants to revisit their original calling, discover the personal meaning hidden in their daily routine and learn self-help methods to reclaim and sustain their passion for their profession. Come prepared to remember why you chose your work and recover the deep satisfaction of being a health professional.
Who Should Apply
- Residency directors or other medical educators in search of well-tested innovative self-care methods for furthering professional and personal resiliency for residents
- Educators spearheading Physician and/or Nurse Well-Being Programs, or Well Being Committees in hospitals, hospital systems, physician group practices, or other healthcare organizations
- Residents or Fellows involved in Resident or Fellow Well-Being Programs or Clinician Well-Being Committees

Cancellation & Refund Policy
A deposit of $300 is due at time that your application is accepted. The tuition balance is due by April 1, 2019. A full refund of deposit (less processing fee of $25) will be issued for cancellations on or BEFORE April 1, 2019. Cancellations after April 1 will forfeit deposit. Course directors must attend the 2.5-day training prior to implementation of the course at their institution.
We strongly suggest that two course co-directors attend from each institution. If you are implementing the RISHI Resiliency Curriculum for a Physician or Resident Wellness program/committee, one of the course directors must be a physician. If you are implementing the RISHI Resiliency Curriculum for a Nurse Wellness program/committee, one of the course directors must be a nurse. Our experience has shown that implementation of the course is more likely when there are two co-directors to support each other during implementation, and further guarantees the continuity of the curriculum.
Prior to attending the RISHI Resiliency Training Workshop, the course director(s) must obtain written institutional support from appropriate directors of the Resident, Physician, Nurse Wellness Committee/Program expressing a level of interest in implementing the curriculum at their institution and understanding of the licensing fee.
The Directors of the Wellness Committee/Program at your institution need to be aware that our RISHI resiliency curriculum, as well as, utilizing the RISHI copyrighted FMM program, involves a licensing fee, thus, they should have a plan to provide fiscal support.
Participation in the workshop does not obligate your institution to paying the licensing fee. RISHI’s only requirement is, in the event you desire to move forward with the program you agree to pay the initial licensing fee and evaluate further participation from year to year. We have a form that requires the signature of the individual responsible for approving the licensing fee, again, only if you decide to move forward with the program.
Please keep in mind, this is copyrighted material and cannot be used without payment of the licensing fee. We also offer, and highly recommend your leadership attend and participate in one of our workshops to fully engage and understand the value of our program(s). RISHI is here for you and your leadership if there are questions or additional information is needed regarding the licensing fee or any other aspect of the program.
The course director(s) agree(s) to use a nationally standardized evaluation, provided by RISHI, for residents, physicians, or nurses participating in the course. RISHI is available to provide a summarization of your course evaluations annually.
The course must be taught in its entirety as described in the syllabus. Any other use of the syllabus must be discussed with Rachel Naomi Remen, MD and Evangeline C. Workshop participants will be enabled to:
- Implement and evaluate a 20-hour longitudinal innovative transformational curriculum for Residents, Physician and Nurse Well-Being programs
- Compare the transformational potential of the discovery model to the traditional cognitive/intellectual educational model in Residency and in traditional CME programs for physicians and CE programs for nurses
- Teach, discuss and maintain the Interactional Principles of Affective Domain interaction, including Generous Listening, with academic or professional groups
- Understand and implement the major tools and strategies of Affective Domain education
- Teach strategies of Affective Domain reflection and journal writing to academic or professional groups
- Learn how to create a safe interactional space for learning and transformation within the academic or professional setting
- Enable an academic or professional group to use symbolic language in discerning and reinforcing personal meaning and calling
- Direct an academic or professional group in writing and sharing a personal mission statement

Continuing Education for Nurses
Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 10064. 12.5 CE contact hours are available for licensed California nurses.
California BRN continuing education credits are accepted by most state nursing boards; please verify with your state professional regulatory agency if they will accept a California CE certificate.

You can reserve these rooms online after your application has been approved. Our room rates are $169 per night, plus tax. Book your hotel room as soon as your application has been approved, so as not to be disappointed. Rooms in our discounted room block will sell out quickly.

Travel: Participants fly in from all over the country to attend the Tending the Flame training. If you are arriving by plane and will be renting a car, either the Dayton or Cincinnati airports are recommended. The Dayton Intl airport (DAY) is 22 miles/30-min drive from the Hilton Garden Inn Dayton South; the Cincinnati Intl airport (CVG) is 55 miles/70-min drive from the hotel – depending on traffic.
